London’s Luxurious Lovely New Crossrail Transports Of Delight.

The contract for the trains for the Crossrail London underground line has now been placed.

The 1 billion pounds will buy 65 trains.

Assuming each train has 10 carriages (a very generous estimate), the £1,000,000,000 / 650 gives about £1.5 million per carriage.

For a million pounds I'd like it to be like this. (Click on image for the thebeautyoftransport page.)

But it will probably look more like this. (Again, click image for thebeautyoftransport blog with more such images.)

This is perhaps equivalent to 15 luxury cars.

Or approximately the lifetime’s wages of one worker (a train driver gets more than £25k year year, I think; a ticket collector possibly less).

I can’t remember how many ticket office workers are now to be going. Maybe 650.

760 jobs are apparently now made safe at Bombardier.

Another thought…

£1m would buy 40 of these:

You can get one here.

So for the price of one train (which I now learn are 200m long, so may well hold 10 carriages), the GLC could get 400 Quadskis and operate them like Boris bikes. You could drive on the streets or boat on the Thames… or it the weather keeps up, boat on the streets.
