The Legacy Of Joe Connarte

I cannot recall when I first became aware of his work; it seems that it was always there – in my mind at least, though strangely obscure in the world of art itself. But I well remember the day of our first meeting. I had been interrailing round the Med with a couple of friends from art school, and on a coastal path, had bumped into sometime who turned out to be an ex-intimate of Dali. She offered to take us to a reasonable place to stay but we never got there. Instead we all found ourselves in the company of some dodgy strangers, one of whom turned out to be Joe.

Over the years I kept expecting to see his work featured somewhere, but though he seemed to parallel a number of trends, and sometimes anticipate them, he remains “for connoisseurs only”.

Always exact with his brush, his works are easily accommodated into the modern mind frame, and well suit the computer screen. I’ve scanned a few of the choicer pieces from his estate, and offer them here as a reminder of what might have been an important passage through 20th century art…
